Spur Electron’s laboratory is also the only UK laboratory designated Category A by ESA, demonstrating the highest level of technical capability and verification standards.

Analytical Laboratory

The Spur Electron Component and Materials Assessment Laboratory combines specialist analytical expertise with advanced facilities to support both internal engineering services and independent testing for the space, defence and commercial electronics industries.

The laboratory provides detailed component and PCB analysis, including:

• Optical inspection
• Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)
• Energy Dispersive X-ray material analysis
• Radiographic (X-ray) inspection
• Hermeticity testing
• Chemical and mechanical decapsulation
• Chemical etching
• Wafer lot acceptance testing
• Bond pull and die shear testing
• Microsection analysis


 
Spur Electron also performs counterfeit avoidance testing in accordance with the AS6081 standard, helping to identify suspect or fraudulent components and protect supply chain integrity.

Additional laboratory investigations include constructional analysis (CA), destructive physical analysis (DPA), and failure analysis (FA) to support engineering verification and root cause identification.

The laboratory also supports SMT assembly verification through solder verification testing, a critical ESA requirement for validating component suitability in space hardware.

Spur Electron is one of the few laboratories in Europe recommended by ESA to perform this specialised verification work.
