Spur Electron Contributes to ESA's Groundbreaking Proba-3 Mission
The European Space Agency's (ESA) Proba-3 mission has achieved a significant milestone, becoming the world's first mission capable of creating artificial solar eclipses in orbit.
The mission consists of two satellites, the Coronagraph and the Occulter, which fly in an ultra-precise formation. By maintaining a carefully controlled distance and alignment, the Occulter blocks the Sun's bright disc, allowing the Coronagraph to observe the Sun's outer atmosphere, known as the corona. This enables scientists to study solar activity with a level of detail previously only possible during natural solar eclipses.
Since their launch in December 2024, the two spacecraft have successfully demonstrated the world's first precise formation flight, paving the way for the creation of artificial solar eclipses in space. These achievements represent a major advancement in formation-flying technology and solar observation capabilities.
